Kurt Angle and Shane McMahon at the King of the Ring

At the height of WWF's Attitude Era, few expected one of the most brutal matches of 2001 to involve company executive and the owner's son, Shane McMahon. Yet at King of the Ring, Shane stepped into the ring against Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle, who was wrestling HIS THIRD MATCH OF THE NIGHT, and delivered a performance that would become legendary among pro wrestling fans.

In a violent street fight match filled with unforgettable moments, the sheer determination displayed by both competitors transformed the bout from a simple grudge match into one of the most talked-about hardcore encounters of the era.

While Angle ultimately emerged victorious, the real story was the punishment both men endured. Shane once again proved he was willing to risk his body alongside the full-time wrestlers, while Angle demonstrated the toughness and intensity that would help define his rise as one of the best pro wrestlers of all time. More than two decades later, this match remains a standout and a lasting example of the unpredictable chaos that made the Attitude Era so memorable.

When Jeff Jarrett faced Kurt Angle on January 11, 2009, it marked one of the most significant main events in TNA history. John Cena retired on December 13, 2025, having wrestled more matches—and divided more audiences—than almost anyone in professional wrestling history. A record 17-time world champion, he is widely regarded as one of the defining figures of his era.

But none of that mattered on the June 27, 2002, network broadcast of WWE SmackDown!

That night, Cena had one job: survive five minutes with Kurt Angle.

With Cena’s career now complete, his official WWE television debut no longer feels like an introduction. It feels like a thesis statement—one neither the audience nor Cena himself could fully understand until the work was finished. He began his career with a loss, and he ended it the same way, spending the years in between carrying a company, shaping an era, and entertaining millions.

New York Radio Advertisements for Live WWF Event in 2002

Radio WWF was a radio broadcast in the early 1990s.

The below radio advertisements promoted two separate World Wrestling Federation (WWF) live events, to be held at Broome County Arena in Binghamton, New York, in December 2001. Prior to the purchase of World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and the acquisition of talent from the defunct Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) in early 2001, the WWF tended to book their live events (house shows) at larger venues. Having wrestling superstars like "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, and The Rock, the WWF would fill large stadiums and venues with ease. However, now with an influx of new professional wrestling talent from the WCW and ECW, the WWF had the opportunity to return to their old live event format from the WWF "Golden Age" in the 1980s. This format would allow the WWF to hold multiple live events on the same day, utilizing the large roster of wrestlers the company now employed. For example on January 4, 2002, the WWF held two separate events with different wrestlers, one at the Broome County Arena, and another at Moncton Coliseum in New Brunswick, Canada. For the first time in professional wrestling history, there was one major professional wrestling company that dominated the landscape of the United States and Canada.

Shane McMahon [Video]

Shane B. McMahon, son of Vincent K. McMahon and Linda M. McMahon (née Edwards), was born into the world of professional wrestling through his parents, and began his World Wrestling Federation (WWF) career at a young age working in the company's warehouse and appearing in the company's merchandise catalog. Shane began his on-screen career as a WWF referee in 1988. Shane has wrestled in over 125 WWF matches, beginning in 1998 against Mankind (Mick Foley). Shane's match against Kurt Angle at the King of the Ring in 2001, and his match against AJ Styles in 2017 at Wrestlemania 33, are career highlights.

Pro Wrestling Video Games Offer Nostalgia: WWE 2K, Showdown: Legends of Wrestling, and WWE Legends of Wrestlemania [Videos]

At the end of October 2015, 2K Sports will release the third installment in their WWE game series, WWE 2K16. The pro wrestling video game will include over 120 playable characters, the most offered in the history of pro wrestling video games. A highlight in the roster is the amount of “WWE Legends,” and former WWE talent featured as playable characters. WWE 2K16 will include over 42 wrestlers from the 1980s, the 1990s, and early 2000s. Once the game is released, periodically there will be many more retro professional wrestlers available for download. The only other pro wrestling video games that rival WWE 2K16's roster of classic wrestlers is Acclaim Entertainment's 2004 release of Showdown: Legends of Wrestling, which includes 73 playable characters and THQ's 2009 release of WWE Legends of Wrestlemania which features 39 classic wrestlers and four World Wrestling Federation managers.

Update: WWE 2K17 offers 60 "WWE Legends" when including downloadable content. WWE 2K18 includes 74 "WWE Legends" and Hall of Fame Superstars for a total of 86 different classic/retro wrestler incarnations. WWE 2K19 offers 191 playable characters with 54 "WWE Legends" included. WWE 2K20 includes 70 different playable "WWE Legends."

TNA Wrestling Champions led by Lashley

As of August 7, 2014, the TNA World Heavyweight Champion is Lashley (Franklin Roberto "Bobby" Lashley). He was awarded the belt after defeating Eric Young on the June 19th edition of Impact Wrestling, held in Bethleham, Pennsylvania. Lashley is the 16th professional wrestler to hold the TNA Heavyweight Championship.

Pro Wrestler Chyna enters TNA by debuting on the new program, Impact Wrestling [Video]

Professional wrestler, Chyna (real name Joan Marie Laurer), made her TNA Wrestling debut in a surprise visit to the TNA weekly program now named Impact Wrestling. She will be the tag team partner of Kurt Angle at the pay-per-view event Sacrifice on May 15, 2011 in Orlando, Florida. The episode of Impact Wrestling also saw the return of Mick Foley using the term, “Wrestling Matters” to establish a new direction of where the company is headed in the future.

The Baltimore Sun's Kevin Eck has written a list of the Top 50 wrestling stars on his blog, Ring Posts. While the list can be debated, it seems to be more comprehensive compared to WWE's list officially released in December for their DVD, Top 50 Superstars of All Time.

The Baltimore Sun's Top 50 Wrestling Stars are as follows:

Hulk Hogan – The biggest star in the history of the industry and an iconic figure in pop culture, the 12-time world champion’s name has become synonymous with pro wrestling.

Ric Flair – The words “world champion” and “Ric Flair” have been synonymous ever since he won the first of his 16 world titles in 1981. “The Nature Boy” is perhaps the industry’s most complete performer when it comes to combining showmanship, microphone skills and in-ring ability. Flair, who still mixes it up in the ring on occasion, has wrestled in five decades.
Andre the Giant – Billed at 7 feet 4 and anywhere from 400 to 500 pounds, he truly was a larger than life figure and one of the most famous wrestlers and top gate attractions of all time.

TNA Heavyweight Rankings (UPDATED)

On April 26, 2010, TNA Wrestling created a monthly Top 10 Contender ranking system. Kurt Angle vowed to attain #1 and ultimately get a title shot at the coveted TNA World Championship.

**Due to a vacant TNA World Championship, the Heavyweight Rankings have been set aside.**

Kurt Angle had won six ranking matches in a row, however, he will now face off competators in a TNA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT. Winners advance to the Finals at "Bound For Glory" on Sunday, October 10 to crown a new TNA World Heavyweight Champion.
