Bob Backlund's second run in the World Wrestling Federation [Videos]

From February 1978 to December 1983, Bob Backlund held the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) World Heavyweight Championship.* Soon after his loss to The Iron Sheik (Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri), Backlund temporary left the WWF in late Summer 1984. In 1992, Backlund returned to the WWF, and gained a cult following for his "old school" wrestling style, his retro promos, and his impressive showing during the 1993 Royal Rumble match. In late Summer 1994, Backlund rejected his positive attitude image and embraced a more devious persona. In November 1994, Backlund briefly held the WWF World Heavyweight Championship, losing it to Diesel three days after he had won it from Bret Hart at the 1994 Survivor Series.

Since 1963, holding the top championship title in the WWE has been a sign of respect and a representation of the wrestling organization. In addition, the holder of the top championship title received the biggest payday and was often seen in the wrestling card's main event. Although there have been "transition champions,*" for the most part the holder of the top title meant a long-term life change for the title holder, as it meant being the highest-paid wrestler in the company.

The Iron Sheik - World Wrestling Federation Heavyweight Champion [Videos]

From December 26, 1983, to January 23, 1984, the Iron Sheik (born Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri) held the World Wrestling Federation Heavyweight Championship. Paired with the infamous Freddie Blassie as his manager, the Iron Sheik garnered immediate heat with his anti-American rhetoric and his famous line, "Iran number one!"

During his 28 day WWF Championship reign in late 1983 and early 1984, the Iron Shiek had a number of non-title matches as well as defended the WWF Championship 15 times. Major competitors for the title included older wrestlers at the end of their careers, Pat Patterson and Cheif Jay Strongbow. On a Monday night in New York City, the Iron Sheik eventually lost the title against Hulk Hogan, changing the course of professional wrestling forever.

Although the Iron Sheik's time as World Wrestling Federation Heavyweight Champion was short, he played a significant role as the "evil villain" needed at the right time to be defeated by an all-American hero, Hulk Hogan.

Beginning with his August 29, 1992 match against the British Bulldog in London, England, Bret Hart started his five year reign as the best wrestler in the World Wrestling Federation. From 1992 to 1997, Hart held the WWF Heavyweight Championship title five times and wrestled in 144 high profile matches. In fact, Hart was recognized by Pro Wrestling Illustrated magazine multiple times during this time span. Hart was nominated as Best Pro Wrestler four times; winning the Match of the Year in 1992, 1996, and 1997; winning the Feud of the Year in 1993 and 1994; nominated as the Most Popular Wrestler in 1993 and 1994; winning the Inspirational Wrestler of the Year in 1994; winning the Comeback of the Year Award and the Most Hated Wrestler in 1997; and ultimately presented with the Lifetime Achievement Editor's Award in 2003. In addition, Hart was recognized by the World Wrestling Federation as the Superstar of the Year in 1993 and won a combined five "Slammy" awards in 1994, 1996, and 1997.
