Some promos shake the mic. Others shake the industry.

On May 27, 1996, WCW Monday Nitro opened the second hour of the program with a match in progress between Steve Doll and The Mauler, two mid-card professional wrestlers who had both previously wrestled in the World Wrestling Federation (under different names) with the surprise outsider that was about to walk through the crowd and drop a promo that forever chang professional wrestling. The Outsider was Scott Hall, looking and sounding just like Razor Ramon from the WWF.

“You want a war? You're gonna get one.”  

This wasn't just a promo—it was a major strike in the Monday Night Wars that would end up nearly ending the World Wrestling Federation, but in retrospect somehow had something to do in ending the WCW five years later.

In just two appearances during the Nitro program that day, Hall made his presence known.

In a rare simulcast between Vince McMahon and Mr. Perfect on WWF SUPERSTARS, and Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan from WWF WRESTLING CHALLENGE, the World Wrestling Federation presented a special Halloween broadcast featuring a WWF Tag Team Championship match between Champions the Natural Disasters (Earthquake and Typhoon) and Money Inc. ("Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase and Irwin R. Schyster).

While there were notable title changes that occurred on television, and important Superstar vs Superstar matchups, the broadcast of WWF SUPERSTARS on October 31, 1992, ushered in a change in format, and featured matches between WWF Superstars against each other rather than the old format of Superstars against enhancement talent (a.k.a. jobbers). While the change primarily was seen as build up to Fox's November edition of Saturday Night's Event and 1992's Survivor Series, this change in format eventually led to the format seen on Monday Night Raw which debuted two months later on the USA Network, albeit to a live audience rather than matches taped in advance as seen on WWF SUPERSTARS and WWF WRESTLING CHALLENGE.

In the weeks to follow, WWF SUPERSTARS and WWF WRESTLING CHALLENGE presented such "main event" matchups as:

Beginning in 1985 as non-televised special event, the King of the Ring tournament saw it's wrestling pinnacle with the event conclusion held as a pay-per-view on June 13, 1993 at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio. At the 1993 event, Bret Hart defeated Razor Ramon (Scott Hall), Mr. Perfect (Curt Hennig), and Bam Bam Bigelow. King of the Ring winners included such World Wrestling Federation Superstars as Don Muraco (1985), King Harley Race (1986), Randy Savage (1987), Ted DiBiase (1988), Tito Santana (1989), Bret Hart (1991), Bret Hart (1993), Owen Hart (1994), Mabel (1995), and Stone Cold Steve Austin (1996).

There were no events held in 1990 and 1992.

At the 1996 pay-per-view event, Stone Cold Steve Austin won the tournament, and left a lasting impression with his victory speech, uttering the infamous words:

All he's gotta do is go buy him a cheap bottle of Thunderbird and try to get back some of that courage he had in his prime. As the King of the Ring, I'm servin' notice to every one of the WWF superstars. The 1994 WWF Royal Rumble..."30 Participants…In Your Living Room!" [Videos]

Beginning in 1988, the company formerly known as the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) began to hold an annual Royal Rumble match. The match involved 30 professional wresters entering the ring at timed intervals until one participant remained and was declared the victor. According to WWF ring announcer Howard Finkel, the rules for the 1994 Royal Rumble were as follows:

"Earlier today, the 30 participants who entered [the Royal Rumble] drew numbers at random, and in just a few moments, we will see numbers 1 and 2 enter. And then every 1 1/2 minutes thereafter, the other participants will enter according to the numbers they drew. Remember in the Royal Rumble, it is every man for himself, no friends, only foes. Elimination occurs at anytime when a Superstar is thrown out over the top rope and onto the floor. The one man remaining in the ring after all 30 participants have entered, will be declared the winner of the Royal Rumble."

WWF History: 1994 - An Interesting Year for "Big Daddy Cool" Diesel [20 Videos]

The World Wrestling Federation (WWF) saw some major changes occur in 1994. The rise of the professional wrestler known as Diesel to WWF World Champion was one of the biggest transformations.

To understand the rise of Diesel, it is important to understand the departure of Hulk Hogan from the WWF. At the time, Hulk Hogan was the biggest star in WWF history. Hogan's WWF departure in late 1993 and later emergence in the Ted Turner-owned World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in June 1994 shook the foundation that the WWF was built upon. WWF owner Vince McMahon and company were in a major search for Hogan's replacement --- a big, charismatic, steroid-free, entertainer. While the WWF leadership allowed workhorse Bret "Hitman" Hart to hold the title for over 240 days in 1994, they saw a desire for a change. "Big Daddy Cool" Diesel was that change.
