Professional wrestlers crossed paths frequently in the 1980s as they entered different territorial wrestling promotions. In some cases, wrestlers would enter a wrestling promotion around the same time as was the case with Curt Hennig coming from the AWA and Terry Taylor coming from the WCWA, both finding themselves facing each other at the beginning of their World Wrestling Federation (WWF) careers. During their match on July 31, 1988, at WWF WRESTLEFEST 1988, neither wrestler was utilizing a character gimmick yet. Hennig would soon adopt the Mr. Perfect gimmick in late August 1988 and go undefeated until March 19, 1990. In October 1988, Taylor took on the name of the Red Rooster from Bobby Heenan but failed to go anywhere in the promotion after he parted ways with Heenan in early 1989. In June 1990, Taylor left the WWF for IWA and AJPW, eventually landing in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in August 1990. Taylor would return to the WWF in October 1992, and by that time, Mr. Perfect had been a multiple WWF title holder and was considered one of the best WWF Intercontinental Champions of all time. Now rebranded as Terrific Terry Taylor, he would later face Mr. Perfect on WWF SUPERSTARS (French Language Broadcast) on January 3, 1993, and on Monday Night Raw airing on January 18, 1993.
