Oprah Winfrey interviews Hulk Hogan on May 24, 1985. |
The success of professional wrestling exploded after Hulk Hogan won the World Wrestling Federation Heavyweight Championship in 1984. By 1985, after the success of the WWF's WrestleMania, professional wrestling had moved into the mainstream of American culture. At the time, Oprah Winfrey was becoming the most popular television personality in the Chicago media market before broadcasting nationwide in 1986.
On May 24, 1985, AM Chicago hosted by Oprah Winfrey dedicated the entire program to the World Wrestling Federation with a somewhat conversational interview with Hulk Hogan asking him about drug use. As legend has it, later in the program after Hulk Hogan's match against Don Muraco, Hulk Hogan avoids Oprah on purpose, showing that he didn't appreciate her earlier question on drug use.
