Well before the internet and steaming services, cable television was dominating the at-home entertainment industry. The popular cable channel USA Network had a long relationship with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) that began in the early 1980s. This relationship created a partnership that broadcasted several wrestling programs over the years. In 1997, the WWF had multiple television programs on air, including WWF Superstars, which first aired in syndication in 1986, and switched to cable in 1996 on the USA Network. 

During the 1980s and 1990s, many top-rated professional wrestling matches occurred on pay-per-view events, such as WWF Wrestlemania and WWF Summerslam. However, the television wrestling programs offered important build up moments that were critical to adding significance to the upcoming pay-per-view matches. In addition, there were times where title changes occurred as well as significant storyline moments. Above all, wrestling programs during this era offered entertainment on a weekly basis showcasing WWF talent. 

On February 9, 1997, the USA Network aired WWF Superstars which featured Steve Austin, Bret Hart, The Undertaker, Paul Bearer, Vader, Jim Cornette, Jim Ross, referee Earl Hebner, WWF Official Gerald Brisco, and Sunny as a ring announcer, all in one wrestling segment!

Born on July 2, 1957, Bret Hart is one of the most successful professional wrestlers in history. An accomplished amateur wrestler, Hart was the 1977 Mount Royal Collegiate Champion in his native Canada. He began his professional wrestling career in 1978 at a Stampede Wrestling event in Saskatoon. Coincidentally, Hart later won his first World Wrestling Federation Heavyweight Championship title in Saskatoon in 1992. After a successful in-ring professional wrestling career that lasted until 2000, Hart was forced to retire due to a serious head injury that occurred while wrestling for World Championship Wrestling. Since his retirement, Hart has returned to professional wrestling in various capacities, including a brief in-ring stint in WWE during 2010, which saw him winning the United States Championship. Twice inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame (2006, 2019), Hart was honored with an induction into Canda's Walk of Fame in 2021, which honored his achievements and accomplishments as a Canadian.

WWE and UFC merge to create a larger Endeavor organization [Videos]

 

WWE will merge with UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship), which is owned by Endeavor, to create a multi-billion dollar live sports entertainment company. UFC is valued at $12.1 billion, and WWE was valued at $9.3 billion. UFC was founded in 1990, whereas WWE was founded in 1953 as Capitol Wrestling Corporation Ltd.

Endeavor will retain a 51 percent controlling interest in the new company, with the remaining 49 percent spread across WWE's shareholders, which include Vince McMahon. Ari Emanuel will serve as CEO of the new entity, with Mark Shapiro as president and chief operating officer, and Vince McMahon as an executive chairman.
