Multiple reputable professional wrestling sources confirm that during the summer of 1993, plans were in place for World Wrestling Federation Heavyweight Champion Hulk Hogan to face Bret Hart in their first-ever singles match. According to Bret Hart, the bout was scheduled for the 1993 SummerSlam event in Auburn Hills, Michigan.
However, for reasons never fully disclosed, Hulk Hogan opted to drop the championship to Yokozuna at the 1993 King of the Ring event instead. On that same night, Bret Hart delivered an incredible performance, winning the King of the Ring tournament by defeating Razor Ramon (Scott Hall), Mr. Perfect (Curt Hennig), and Bam Bam Bigelow in three outstanding matches.
